StorySprout ("the app") is a story-making app for children ages 5–10, built by Michael Lazaro ("we", "us"). We designed StorySprout to collect as little information as possible. This page explains exactly what the app does with data, in plain language.
Finished books, in-progress drafts, sticker scenes, the author name typed on a title page, and a count of stories created are saved locally on your device only. Deleting the app deletes them. We cannot see or access any of it.
When your child creates a story, the choices they make (hero type and name, setting, story spark, selected options, and any short idea they type) and the story pages so far are sent over an encrypted connection to our story server, which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude AI service to write the next pages. This content is used only to generate the story text, is processed transiently, and is not stored by us in any database. We do not send any device identifiers, names, or contact information with these requests. Anthropic processes this content as our service provider; see Anthropic's privacy policy.
StorySprout does not require or knowingly collect personal information from children. There are no accounts, no chat with other users, no ads, and no social features. Free-text fields (like a hero's name or a story idea) are used only to write the story and are not retained. Purchases and external actions are protected by a parental gate. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, contact us and we will help; because we keep no user database, there is typically nothing for us to delete.
Subscriptions are purchased through Apple's App Store or Google Play. We use RevenueCat to check subscription status; RevenueCat receives an anonymous app-generated identifier and purchase receipts — never your child's stories or names. See RevenueCat's privacy policy. We never see your payment details.
Books and drafts live only on your device — deleting the app deletes them. To have your anonymous purchase record deleted, see our data deletion page or email us.
